My copywriting experience includes working with organisations ranging from newspapers to businesses and public sector organisations. My first corporate communications roles were with British Airways, which included writing weekly reports presented to the board, and global law firm Baker & McKenzie. Since 1994 I have been providing copywriting and a range of editorial services to my own clients and running zarywacz, my communications partnership. I’ve been a Devon copywriter since 2004.
I work with both small and large businesses and organisations and come into contact with MPs, councillors, business leaders and organisations such as the Federation of Small Businesses, North Devon Manufacturers Association, NDBA, North Devon+ and EEF.
Web sites, blogs and social media
While I started out copywriting for printed publications and documents, I soon began writing for online media. In 1985, while at British Airways, I co-wrote a 7,000-screen online brochure for the airline published on Prestel, BT’s videotext service. Today it would be called a web site.
Since then I’ve written web copy for my own clients and progressed to blogs and social media. I write online material covering architectural, engineering, heating, IT, professional and entertainment topics.
My journalism experience (below) is valuable when writing PR material as I know what journalists want and ensure that every word counts in a press release or case study. I also research content, conduct face-to-face and phone interviews to obtain client quotes – often the best form of recommendation – and liaise with media contacts. These capabilities have enabled me to write press releases for global chemical corporations, IT firms, start-ups, business and non-profit organisations and theatrical productions.
Many people know me from my work as freelance business editor of the weekly North Devon Journal when I contributed two pages of articles, including interviews with business leaders and owners, coverage of business issues and initiatives, and news of business events and achievements.
While at the Journal, I worked with the North Devon Employment and Skills Board on a number of Apprenticeship campaign for the North Devon, producing 16 weeks of full-page coverage, including case studies, interviews, articles on how apprenticeships work and relevant information for employers, jobseekers and parents.
The campaigns increased apprenticeship starts in the area by 15% above Devon, South West and UK levels.
As business editor of the North Devon Journal I was heavily involved in promoting, covering and judging the North Devon Journal Business Awards over three years. I was also invited to judge the North Devon Manufacturers Association’s Student Awards two years running and have organised and judged the North Devon Business Action wards twice. I don’t enter awards as I am usually judging them.
As a journalist and business leader, I get involved in many events, and organise some myself. Many events fail because of lack of publicity and I understand the need to publicise any event as widely as possible and far in advance. I am experienced in publicising events in print and online, on radio and television to attract maximum interest and participation.
I am also experienced in hosting and presenting at events and enjoy speaking to small groups in seminars or to hundreds of people in a theatre or lecture hall setting.
Copywriting has involved me in all forms of communication, so whether you want to produce your own magazine and need someone to write and edit it, want to host an awards programme and need someone to promote it and attract entrants or need someone to develop and deliver a full-scale PR campaign, I would be pleased to work with you.
